Lola Jenkins has brought a unique vision through her incredible art quilts. Her quilts display the joy and freedom of pursuing her passion. The mystique of this African-American woman is that she is just in her fifth year of sewing. Without any background in sewing, art, perspective, drawing, etc she developed her passion. Through her courage and fearless approach in creating art quilts she has evolved to master-quilter status. Lola states, "I don't know the rules, so I can't break the rules of quilting."
Her first showing was at the Central Oklahoma Quilt Guild show in June, 2007. She won 2nd Place for an art quilt of Ray Charles, and three Honorable Mentions. She entered the Centennial State Fair of Oklahoma in September, 2007. Her winnings were Best of Show, five 1st Places, two 2nd Places, and one 3rd Place. She was the Featured Artist at the 2008 Winter Quilt Show in Oklahoma City were she also obtained a 2nd place ribbon. She held an one-woman show at the Midwest City Library in celebration of Black History Month, and was the featured guest speaker and solo quilt show artist for a Tulsa event in Feb 2008. She teaches classes and have scheduled speaking engagements in several states. In September of 2008 Lola won three first place ribbons and two 2nd place ribbons at Oklahoma City State fair.
From the beginning, Lola has believed hers is a God-Given hidden talent. She never hesitates, when she overcomes an obstacle or an opportunity arises, to say, "That was God-Thing!", and thanks Him for her Blessings.
Lola was born and raised in Stockton, California. She graduated with honors from High School. After working labor jobs, she joined the Military in 1979. Upon completion of the military she earned her Bachelors Degree with honors from Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tennessee. She held positions with the IRS, Union Pacific Railroad, and her own accounting firm, and her own Bible book-store. With the understanding that education was important she obtained a Masters Degree in Management from Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska. Following the death of her mother, father, and almost losing her own life, her husband died. She declares that at this point her only solace came from God. It was during this time, she believes, that God gave her quilting revelations.
Lola has continuously been called open to be the featured artist at many events. Her 2009 schedule includes being featured artist in Midwest City, Muskogee, Vian, and Eufaula Oklahoma quilt show, in addition to the Oklahoma State Guild retreat at Lake Murray. Currently her art quilts sell anywhere from $200 to $5000 each.
